Phage Consultants Marcin Łoś, as a result of the recruitment process of the regional programme European Funds for Pomerania 2021–2027 (FEPM), within the scope of R&D projects in enterprises (FEPM.01.01-IP.03-001/25), received funding from the Pomeranian Development Agency S.A. for the project entitled: Development of the PhageSense platform for detecting phage infections, representing an innovation in the field of modern diagnostic solutions.
The development of specialized fermentation products in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries (e.g., probiotics) is proceeding extremely dynamically, generating enormous profits. Bacteriophage infections are one of the most serious threats to fermentation processes using bacteria. The inability to quickly detect phage infections can lead to significant production losses and line downtime and in extreme cases, can lead to even company bankruptcy.
As part of the project, we will take on the challenge of creating a platform that allows for the automated detection of bacteriophage infections in bacterial cultures, including bioreactors.
This platform will help to solve the problem of the lack of rapid, sensitive methods for detecting infections. We hope to implement these solutions on a large scale, which will contribute
to increased production efficiency in the industrial biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors. PhageSense platform will reduce financial losses caused by bacteriophage infections and improve production safety and quality standards.
Funding from the European Union will be used to purchase equipment necessary for the project, including an anaerobic chamber, a nanopore sequencer, an autoclave, and a fluorometer.
